Choosing the Right Foundation - How a Bridal Makeup Artist Selects the Perfect Foundation for your Wedding

Hannah is wearing Dior Face + Body

As a wedding makeup artist, I understand the importance of selecting the perfect bridal foundation for your wedding day and achieving a makeup look that still feels like you. I always consider the following options to enable me to make the right choice:

Firstly, I identify your skin type. Whether you have oily, dry, or combination skin, there's a foundation designed to suit your needs. This ensures a flawless finish that lasts throughout the wedding day.

Next, I determine the coverage you desire. Are you looking for a natural, barely-there look or full coverage? I discuss your preferences during your trial to find the ideal balance for your bridal makeup look.

Matching the foundation shade to your skin tone is paramount. I select a hue that seamlessly blends with your complexion to avoid the dreaded foundation neck line!

Lastly, I opt for a long-wearing and transfer-resistant formulas. Your wedding day is full of emotions, and a foundation that stays put ensures you remain picture-perfect from the ceremony to the dance floor.

Choosing the right bridal foundation involves understanding your skin type, desired coverage, and finding the perfect shade. Resulting in a flawless finish that enhances your natural beauty. My goal as bridal makeup artist is always to enhance your features, not mask them.

"Hair Up vs Hair Down: Choosing the Perfect Bridal Hairstyle for Your Wedding Day with Emma Poppy Hair and Makeup"

Introduction: Hey Lovely Brides-to-Be,

Can you believe your big day is just around the corner? I’m right there with you, excitedly obsessing over every detail of your dream bridal look. Lets chat about a major decision: your hairstyle! The age-old question of hair up or hair down has us totally hooked, and I’m ready to help you navigate this style adventure. In this blog post, I’m breaking down the perks and vibes of each choice, so you can confidently rock your look on your special day.

Hair Up - Effortless Chic:

For all the fabulous brides out there, the allure of an updo is real, and I totally get why. The classy and sophisticated vibe that an updo serves up makes it an absolute winner for every kind of wedding. Here's the scoop on why an updo might be for you:

Show-Stopping Dress: Updos let your dress take the spotlight by letting all those details and the dress's shape shine.

Stay Beautiful, All Day: Your wedding day is bound to be a whirlwind of happiness. With an updo, you don't need to worry about those pesky loose strands or frizzies. Your hair will stay fierce no matter the weather or dance moves.

Accessory Galore: From adorable clips to stunning flowers, an updo is like a blank canvas for you to play around with all those amazing hair accessories. Oh, and it's a total rockstar at holding up your veil too!

Cool and Comfy: If you're saying "I do" in the heat, an updo is your cool BFF. No sweaty hair sticking to your back – just cool comfort all day.

Hair Down - Modern Romance:

I totally feel you when you're leaning towards letting those locks loose on your big day. There's an undeniable charm and modern romantic touch that come with this choice, and I’m here for it. Here's what makes having your hair down a fabulous idea:

Modern Romantic Vibes: Flowing locks are all about that dreamy, modern romantic vibe. They're perfect for boho, rustic, and outdoor weddings – picture perfect!

Be You, Naturally: Going for the down hair look lets your true self shine. It's you being you, and that's the best version you can be.

Style Queen Vibes: Loose waves? Natural curls? Sleek straight? Honey, you've got options! Down hairstyles come in all sorts of versions, so you can pick the right style suited to you and your dress.

Face Framing Magic: Unlike an updo, going down frames your face like a work of art. It's like a soft, flattering halo of gorgeousness.

Pro Tip: To add natural volume and to help hair hold, consider using hair extensions from Milk and Blush. It's the secret to achieving that perfect, effortless and long-lasting look.

Conclusion:

Hair up or hair down? Think about your dress, your wedding vibe, and the season you're saying "I do" in. But most importantly think about what feels most like you. Don't forget to reach out to me to book your hair trial, I’m all about helping you make that choice, that makes you feel like a superstar as you go down the aisle.

"The Timeless Beauty of Natural Bridal Makeup: Why It's Always the Best Choice"

I believe in your natural beauty, and my approach to wedding makeup is all about enhancing your features rather than masking them with heavy layers. I love creating different looks, whether it's a bold smokey eye or a striking lip, but my priority is to make sure you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin. Letting your natural beauty shine through is what matters most to me.

There's a myth that you need loads of makeup for your wedding pictures, but that's not necessarily true. Finding the right balance is key, and I won't push for more makeup if you feel it's too much. Your opinions and comfort matter, especially on your wedding day, and I want you to feel at ease and self-assured.

I encourage you to stick with a style that feels authentic to you. Trying something drastically different might lead to regrets, and my goal is to have you feeling 100% yourself as you walk down the aisle.

If you prefer a more natural makeup look, don't worry about not looking special enough on your big day. Skilled makeup application can do wonders with just a few little touches, enhancing your best features and addressing any concerns you may have.

At my studio, I specialise in what a like to call a "natural glow" look. It's about making your best features pop while keeping the overall look soft, fresh and radiant.

When it comes to makeup trends, I always advise taking inspiration from classic sources like Vogue rather than fleeting Instagram fads. "Clean beauty" is a timeless style that you'll see on the pages of Vogue - soft, fresh, and natural. It's all about highlighting your natural beauty with a dewy and luminous glow, using minimal colour to achieve a chic and effortless look.

If you need any advice or guidance on organising your hair and makeup for your special day, feel free to get in touch with me. I'd be thrilled to discuss your wedding and help you out. Check out some examples of natural wedding makeups by me below!

Bridal Skincare Top Tips

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding day. As a bridal makeup artist, I understand the significance of pre-wedding skincare for that radiant glow. While makeup products can enhance your look, a well-crafted skincare routine is essential to achieve clear, glowing skin on your wedding day. Here are some top tips to help you achieve the best bridal skincare results:

  1. Heal Your Gut: A healthy gut is the foundation of glowing skin. Pay attention to your diet, incorporating a variety of vegetables, pre and probiotics to keep your gut happy. Remember, what you put into your body is as crucial as the beauty products you use.

  2. Know Your Skin Type: Identify your skin type to create a personalised skincare routine. Understanding whether your skin is dry, oily, or dehydrated will guide you in selecting suitable products for your needs.

  3. Cleanse Twice a Day: Maintain a consistent cleansing routine to remove dirt, makeup, impurities, and sunscreen. Cleansing both morning and evening prepares your skin for the following skincare products and ensures a fresh canvas for your beauty regimen.

  4. Embrace Acid Exfoliators: Acid exfoliators offer a gentler alternative to granulated scrubs, enhancing the skin's appearance by removing dead cells and promoting renewal. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), like Glycolic and Lactic Acid, brighten the complexion and reduce fine lines. Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), such as Salicylic Acid, benefits oilier and acne-prone skin by clearing clogged pores.

Use acid exfoliators 2-3 times a week, following instructions carefully, and start with lower concentrations if you have sensitive skin. Apply in the evening and use sunscreen during the day, as exfoliation increases sun sensitivity. Consistency and proper use yield smoother, more even-toned skin. Consult a skincare professional for guidance.

  5. Get Your Beauty Sleep: Prioritise quality sleep to allow your skin to repair and rejuvenate overnight. Enhance your skin's radiance with overnight serums or face masks. Consider using pillow mist or an eye mask to promote restful sleep.

  6. Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 2 litres of water daily to keep your skin hydrated and looking refreshed. Proper hydration flushes out toxins and contributes to a radiant complexion.

  7. Pamper Yourself with a Facial: Indulge in a facial or professional treatment to give your skin a luxurious treat. Consult a beauty therapist or dermatologist to identify the best treatments for your skin concerns. Schedule these treatments at least two weeks before your wedding to allow your skin to recover fully.

By following these bridal skincare tips, you'll be well-prepared to achieve a radiant and glowing complexion on your special day. Remember to start your skincare journey well in advance and be consistent to maximise the benefits of your efforts. Best wishes for your wedding!

Introduction:
Preparing for your bridal hair and makeup trial is essential to ensure that your wedding day look is flawless and exactly how you envision it. By following these four important steps, you can make the most of your trial and achieve the perfect bridal look.

  1. Gather Inspiration:
Before your trial, gather inspiration by researching bridal hairstyles and makeup looks. Browse through my gallery, Pinterest boards, or bridal websites to find styles that resonate with your personal taste. Also, try to find images that have a similar hair, skin and eye colour to yourself to ensure your images are suited to you. Having visual references will help you effectively communicate your preferences.

To ensure a successful trial, come prepared with relevant information and items. Bring any hair accessories, veils, or jewellery that you plan to wear on your wedding day. Additionally, wear a top or dress in a similar colour and neckline to your wedding dress, as it will help you visualise the overall look.

  4. Take Detailed Notes and Photos:
Throughout the trial, take photos of each hairstyle and makeup look that you try. This will help you remember which styles you liked best and serve as a reference when discussing your final choices with your stylist.

Bridal Makeup and Hair trends 2023

With weddings of all sizes finally back on in the UK, it is time to start planning what bridal hair and makeup Essex wedding look you want to go for.

I am a firm believer that your bridal hair and makeup should complement your unique beauty, rather than sticking to trends for trends’ sake. That said, a good makeup artist should be able to use trends to influence your look while remaining true to a style that suits you. Knowing what the different beauty trends are means you can choose a makeup look or hair style that you love!

Bridal makeup trends in 2023

No makeup, makeup

Natural makeup which accentuates the bride’s features has always been a popular look but this year we will see the trend go even further with a truly no makeup, makeup look. Think minimal brows and a touch of highlighter. This trend is all about embracing your natural beauty and maintaining a fresh faced look.

Pink and red lips

We typically see brides avoiding colour on their lips in favour of natural, nude colours but this year we will see many brides swap out their eye makeup for reds and pinks, for a bold and fresh look.

Pops of peach

Whether it is peach blusher, peach lips (Sophia Richie), or peach eyeshadow, peach is a beauty trend we will see in weddings of all kinds in 2023. It is a really versatile colour which suits a multitude of brides, and the colour can be used sparsely for a minimal look, or layered up for those who want something bolder.

Wedding hair trends in 2023

Tousled texture

During lockdown, brides-to-be ditched the heat and let their natural hair loose, resulting in healthier, longer hair for many. Embracing your natural curls and waves, with a little tweaking here and there, is a big trend for 2023. It is a style which is easy to create and maintain, and it looks effortlessly chic.

Half up, half down

Half up, half down do’s have been popular now for years, and this style is not going anywhere! This year’s take on the timeless trend involves loose, beachy waves, less volume and more texture. If you have thin hair but want to rock this look, clip in or tape hair extensions are a great way to add volume without damaging your hair.

Hollywood glamour

For some brides, the natural look is too similar to their everyday style. I have seen an increase in demand for Hollywood glamour hairstyles – think smooth, sleek, big curls that belong on the red carpet. This kind of style looks stunning with a sheer head veil as much as it does by itself.

Hair accessories

From veils to headbands, through to smaller accessories like flowers and pearls, accessorising your hair will be big this year. After more than a year of lockdowns and cancelled weddings, accessorising is a chance for brides to finally shine in the biggest way.

I’m going to be sharing some of the wonderful weddings I have been a part of over the years <3, I hope you will be able to draw some inspiration from them for your own weddings you are currently planning. As well as possibly use some of the amazing wedding suppliers and venues I have been fortunate enough to work with.

Shannon & Jack - Married on the 26th May 2017.

I had the pleasure of being Shannon’s bridal hair & makeup artist on her wedding day, she married at the beautiful Creeksea Place in Burnham, Chelmsford Essex.
Shannon opted for natural makeup and relaxed boho hair for herself and her bridesmaids. The hair styles I created included loose waves, ponytails, fishtail braids and undone plaits, which tied in perfectly with her woodland themed wedding.
I hope you enjoy her wedding pictures as much as I have, the bridal photographer is the very talented Ben Moore.
